You're My Best Friend

This post is about my wife, her name is Rhea.

A man is considered to be fortunate, if he has a handful of people he can consider close friends. In a world where everyone is so wrapped up in themselves, this statement is truer than ever. However, when a man finds someone as special as my wife, he is indeed blessed.

Let me tell a little bit about Rhea; she works a full time job as a bartender, but still makes the time to keep an immaculate house. She does all the grocery shopping, laundry, and most of the cooking. She takes care, and bathes the dogs; and she's there to help out when I screw something up. She's patient, caring, and understanding. She's a terrific mother, and a special friend. That's because she is not only my best friend, but she is my lover. No matter how full her plate seems to be, she seldom complains. I have to tell you, God blessed me the day I met her.

We have been together seventeen years, and married for fourteen. After my first marriage, I promised myself to never get married again; but after being with Rhea for a few years, I knew I had to wrap her up; I would have been a fool to ever let her get way. Now, I am not the smartest guy in the world, (ask Rhea, she'll tell you), but I am not that stupid. I do know a good thing when I see one.

I don't often write about my personal life, but I thought I needed to devote one of my posts, to extol the virtues of my wife. She is a very special person, and my life is enriched because of her presence in it.

So in closing, I really only have one thing to say; thank you Rhea, I love you. (Alright, that's two things, but who's counting?)

The Dance Of Life

Life is nothing more than one large Arthur Murray Dance School. From the moment we take our first steps as toddlers, we go through life learning new and different steps. The music we dance to is the rhythm of life. With every new situation, relationship, and employer, we have to learn new steps to be successful.

As kindergartners and throughout elementary school we learn the basic steps of how to get along with others, and how to play well with others. As we enter high school we get into more complicated relationships; boyfriends, girlfriends, dating, the steps we learn change and become more complex. We learn that in a relationship sometimes you call the tune, and sometimes the other person will call the tune you both dance to.

As young adults we learn that our employers, and bosses will be calling the tune, and teach us the steps we have to dance to. As we grow and move up the corporate ladder, we learn that we have to follow the tune of our bosses, while calling the tune for our underlings. The dance becomes more complex.

In marriage we often find that the steps that were once so exciting have become routine and boring. To keep a marriage alive and vibrant you have to incorporate new steps from time to time to stay interested, or in time we will find new partners to dance with.

There is an old saying that people hate change, that is true, but they really hate dull and routine even more. Life is all about growth and change, and we reflect that in our dance.

Today life is changing at a pace never seen before by man. Everyday it seems that we have to learn new steps in order to survive. Life is certainly more difficult, but it is definitely not boring.

As for me, I’m dancing as fast as I can.

Negotiating Love

Love when you are young is a special thing. There is lots of exploring, and lots of passion. Love is exciting, and it is spontaneous. You have hooked up with the most lovely girl in the universe, and she lives just to please you.
Then, you do something stupid; you marry her.
Sure, the first couple of years there are still some steamy nights, but after seven years, and a couple of kids, things tend to change. You find your wife is no longer frothing at the mouth to get mounted by you. This is when you realize you will spend the rest of your life negotiating for love.
My brother has been negotiating for love many years now. His best tactic is to tell his wife that if she doesn't want him to get prostrate cancer, she has to let him keep the workings workable...if you know what I mean.
My brother's method works because he has a wife that gives a rat's ass about him. Very rare. Most of us married guys have to negotiate much harder for their love. Here is an example.
"Come on honey, it's been three weeks." "I haven't felt well. You only think about yourself." "That's not true honey, I brought you home some Chicken McNuggets yesterday." "Yeah, but they were cold." "Come on honey, you know I love you, and will always take care of you." If you did you would show it." "Name it honey, you've got it!" "Well, a trip to Olive Garden might get me in the mood." "Ok, ok Olive Garden it is, but you promise when we get home...." "Well there is one more thing..." "What is it my goddess?" "Clean out the cat box, and take out the trash."
As Rodney Dangerfield would say, "It's not easy being married!"

What, Me Worry?

(Due to popular demand, the following post, originally published on September 15th in an alternate universe, proudly makes an encore appearance.)

Welcome to Black Monday.

The Dow Jones lost 500 points today. Reports state that gasoline will soon be back over $4.00/gal and is headed for $5.00. A five-pound bag of potatoes costs $5.00, and a single tomato is going for $2.00 apiece! While there are no bread lines, yet, there soon will be.

Former head of the Federal Reserve, Alan Greenspan, stated today that we are headed for a world-wide recession, and things will get worse before they get better. Mortgage foreclosures are so bad that some of the nation's largest banks have gone bankrupt, while others avoided bankruptcy by being bought by bigger banks.

Who will come to rescue us from this plight?

Well, Heaven knows it won't be President Bush. He just spent the last eight years putting us in this mess. Someone at work today said that the Federal government should do something to regulate gas prices. DUH! I replied to him, "Well, when you elected an oil-baron president, what did you expect?" Bush has about 100 days left in office, and he will spend every last one of them trying to wring every last penny he can (for himself and his cronies) out of the American people.

I tried to warn people eight years ago about the danger of electing an oil-baron president but they were more concerned about abortion, the danger of same-sex marriages, swearing on TV and radio, and other right-wing conservative problems.

Heaven forbid we let women decide for themselves about issues concerning their own bodies.
Heaven forbid two consenting adults want to be a family.
Heaven forbid someone should SAY something blue on the radio.

If the American people spent half the time worrying about the American people as they do listening to hell-fire-and-damnation lectures from conservative preachers, we probably would not be in this mess. I am not, by nature a political person, but if you want to know my true feelings about American democracy, read "Eeney, Meeney, Miney, Moe".

As for me, I am not worried. I passed Boy Scout survival training 40 years ago. I'm ready at a moment's notice to start digging for grubs, and eating bugs (here in Florida I'll be eating well).

Hope you fare as well.
